Internationally renowned bassist and composer Avishai Cohen is back performing internationally after a long absence due to the Covid 19 pandemic and is set to visit the iconic Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club on 11 and 12 August 2022. “I have missed so much the stage, my fans, and touring in general,” says Cohen. “I am so thrilled to perform live music with my fans in safer environments and conditions; music heals.”

Cohen’s trio features pianist Elchin Shirinov and drummer Roni Kaspi – Shirinov performed with Cohen on the critically acclaimed orchestral recording Two Roses; Kaspi is a young Israeli drummer who was a revelation at the EFG London Jazz Festival in November 2021. “Elchin Shirinov, from Azerbaijan, is a magnificent pianist. He’s very focused and confident, and I’m sure that comes across,” says Cohen. “Then I found drummer Roni Kaspi. She may only be 21, but she’s an exceptional talent and a new spirit who brings her own strong personality.”

“One of the reasons why my music has progressed well is because of the musicians,” explains Cohen. “I have a clear idea of what I want, but the musicians have total freedom. That, to me, is modern jazz. It’s the most democratic form of music but you have to be well invested and intelligent enough to respect what you’re getting. The hardest thing is to be yourself, and to give the freedom to others to be themselves too. And my new album Shifting Sands is the highest level I’ve reached so far: of me being the composer and the idea-maker but having them both state the mood and the vibe.”
