Gretchen Parlato/Lionel Loueke, Whiplash Live and more for EFG Summer Series 2024

The EFG Summer Series returns from the end of June at the top London venues the Barbican, Kings Place and KOKO for a diverse series of five concerts. Things kick off with soulful Cape Verdean singer, Mayra Andrade, who’s accompanied by her compatriot Djodje Almeida on acoustic guitar, to play music from her albums Navega (2006) to Manga (2019) on 29 June, Barbican. This is followed by a live realisation of the powerfully entertaining jazz film, Whiplash, which offers a chance to rediscover Damien Chazelle‘s hit Hollywood movie. The performance will see a perfectly synchronisation live score with the original film and feature Benoît Sourisse and André Charlier’s brilliant Multiquarium Big Band (4 July, Barbican).

By contrast there are intimate sounds on offer from revered American singer Gretchen Parlato and influential Benin-born guitarist Lionel Loueke, when they meet at Kings Place on 11 July to play music from their recent Edition Records releases. Funky sounds abound in the form of Scary Pockets who unleash their jazzified groove-heavy soul, funk and pop cover versions at Camden’s KOKO (12 July) while the series concludes with a return to the Barbican for highly acclaimed singer and songwriter Madeline Peyroux as she performs songs from across her 20-year repertoire including her ninth album, Let’s Walk (21 July).
