Monday, October 30, 2006

Mishka Adams and Mina Agossi are two of the artists to perform at Soho’s Pizza Express Jazz Club as part of the Candid International Jazz Festival, which begins this week.

The event showcases jazz vocalists who are up and coming on the London scene and beyond; it kicks off on Wednesday 1 November with singer-songwriter Leee John, who released his first solo album Feel My Soul in 2005, following his stint as lead singer with the soul/funk group Imagination. On Thursday 2 you can catch Nois 4 featuring Monica Vasconcelos (vocals) and Ingrid Laubrock (saxophones) with Ife Tolentino (guitar) and Chris Wells (drums), playing contemporary Brazilian jazz. Rising star singer-songwriter, guitarist and saxophonist Mishka Adams takes the stage on Friday 3 and Saturday 4 with the john Hoare band. Greek saxophonist Dimitri Vassilakis and vocalist Juliet Kelly team up on Sunday 5 and flamboyant vocalist Imelda May presents a mixture of swing-era classics and original compositions on Monday 6. Cormac Kenevey performs on Thursday 7 alongside the Phil Ware Trio, with whom he recently released his album of standard and original songs This is Living. French-born singer Mina Agossi, who is acclaimed for both her original compositions and unusual reinterpretations of standards gives the final performance of the festival on Wednesday 8 with Eric Jacot (bass) and Ichiro Onoe (drums).
