The fiery sax-bass-drums three-piece return with the latest instalment of their no-nonsense hard-swinging sound with a new album and a string of UK tour dates
QOW Trio is a unique multi-generational jazz band featuring award-winning young firebrand saxophonist Riley Stone-Lonergan, renowned British jazz drum legend Spike Wells and multi-genre bassist and bandleader (and longtime Turin Breaks band member) Eddie Myer. The trio initially got together through their mutual love of Sonny Rollin's classic piano-less trios of the 1950s. They soon found themselves expanding their repertoire to explore the rich and varied territory laid out by the great tradition of big-toned tenor players resulting in the release of their critically acclaimed self-titled debut.
The Hold Up is the trio’s new album featuring compositions by Ellington and Strayhorn, Jackie Mclean, Lee Morgan, Thelonious Monk and Big John Patton as well as four original compositions by Stone-Lonergan. “With this second recording, we feel that we have progressed in cohesion and been able to tackle music in an even wider range of styles, says Wells. “Riley's original compositions have made a huge contribution.”
The recording took place at The Fish Factory following their 2023 tour in Ireland. “We took full advantage of the spacious live room, the band set up together, with no headphones or separation, allowing the music to breathe organically and the interplay to develop in real time,” explains Myer.
The Hold Up is released on CD, digital & vinyl on Friday 26 January 2024 on Ubuntu Music
