Ahmad Jamal has always walked his own path, from precocious beginnings as a piano-playing three-year-old to his mastery of a bluesy minimalism, which indelibly influenced Miles Davis' 1950s modal period and also saw him release a string of classic trio recordings.

Now, at the grand old age of 87, Jamal returns with his latest album, Marseille, a mesmerising and meditative songbook dedicated to the vibrant southern French port city. Alyn Shipton spoke to the legendary pianist about his highly influential career and discovers how the French multicultural hub inspired the veteran to compose this most lyrical of tribut
