Andrew McCormack – Digging in Downtown

Pianist Andrew McCormack has come a long way since he received the ‘Rising Star’ BBC Jazz Award in 2006 thanks to his debut album Telescope.

Building a rock-solid rep since as a top-notch sideman to Jean Toussaint and Kyle Eastwood, as well as creating a fine body of work with Jason Yarde in MY Duo, McCormack made the leap from Brixton to Brooklyn last year and took his playing to a whole new level. The fruits of this move can be heard on his bristling new solo album, First Light, which, as Selwyn Harris discovers, effortlessly combines the pianist’s love of Stravinsky and melodic swing with serious New York attitude
