Walking away from jazz superstardom to live the life of the hermit in the late-1960s could have proved catastrophic for a dreamer such as Charles Lloyd.
However, as Stuart Nicholson discovers, his prolific return since the 1980s – as documented on this month’s Old & New Masters box set and on his latest ECM album with Jason Moran – the saxophonist is reaching transcendent new heights
The year 2013 is shaping-up to be an important one in saxophonist and composer Charles Lloyd’s odyssey through life. On 15 March he’ll reach his 75th birthday – mention of which prompts a groan, a chuckle and “But I’m younger than springtime!” – and to celebrate ECM is bringing out an Old & New Masters box set of his first five albums on the label plus a stunning duet album with pianist Jason Moran recorded last year called Hagar’s Song. Then in April he embarks on a sixdate tour in the USA followed by seven dates in Europe, including an unmissable appearance at London’s Barbican on 28 April. But what excites him most is performing.
