Chris Potter’s ascent to the top of the tenor sax tree hasn’t been as swift as his current form might suggest it should have been – more a steady 20-year burn of increasingly impressive playing and recording.
Since 2012 he’s been setting Pat Metheny’s Unity Band alight with his imaginatively incendiary work, yet the same period has also seen his solo career on ECM blossom, first with The Sirens, and now with Imaginary Cities with his newly-formed Underground Orchestra that sees his sonic canvas expand to include strings. Selwyn Harris discovers it’s the inequalities, destruction and rebuilding of cities around the world that is the inspiration behind his most creative work to date
