Since he first emerged in 1990, aged just 17, Christian McBride has always been an exuberant, virtuosic presence on upright and electric bass.

One of the most recorded and respected musicians of his generation, the bassist and jazz educator's ambition to become a noted big-band arranger received a sudden kick-start after an out-of-the-blue commission from Wynton Marsalis. Speaking to Stuart Nicholson on the eve of his first ever European tour with his Big Band, which includes a much-anticipated stop-off at this year's Cheltenham Jazz Festival, McBride talks about his drive to arrange for extended ensembles and the vital role of mentorship in contemporary jazz education
