Dee Dee Bridgewater is at the top of today’s jazz vocal tree, yet this isn’t just thanks to her technical prowess, armful of awards or her impeccable work to date, but also through her powers as a storyteller and an impassioned live performer.

Peter Quinn spoke to her about her latest album, Dee Dee’s Feathers, which features the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra and its leader/trumpeter Irvin Mayfield, and how recording in the Crescent City took her into the very heart and soul of jazz’s roots
