Dennis Rollins – Rolling ’Bone

The name Dennis Rollins has become synonymous with not just one of the finest British trombonists of the last quarter century, but with an attitude and presence not often associated with such an unwieldy instrument.

Rollins is not just the baddest ’bonist on the block but since his emergence in the late 1980s he’s become a bandleader with a sonic vision that’s unified traditional brass sounds with club culture beats and the whole spectrum of Afro-Carribean jazz sounds. The latest of these is Velocity Trio – featuring the highly talented Hammond B3 master Ross Stanley and prodigious London-based Portuguese drummer Pedro Segundo. Ahead of the release of their new album Symbiosis in September, Kevin Le Gendre spoke to Rollins about how his latest acclaimed ensemble are morphing from a gifted three-piece into a singularly supercharged unit
