From his prodigious debut, Be Who You Are, which garnered a Mercury Prize nomination in 1999, saxophonist Denys Baptiste has always set a high watermark for his work.
Yet for his latest long-player he's taken on the intimidating legacy of John Coltrane's most challenging period and produced what promises to be his finest album to date, Late Trane. Ahead of his performance at Cheltenham Jazz Festival in May, the Londoner spoke to Kevin Le Gendre about the impact of Saint John's abstract period and deep collaborations on the album, which include an energised guest spot from enigmatic British saxophonist Steve Williamson
