With a reputation for high-octane tenor horn since the 1990s, the Californian-born Donny McCaslin's career rocketed to another level following his band's major contribution to the late David Bowie's 2016 swansong, Blackstar.
McCaslin paid tribute with one of that year's most lauded contemporary jazz albums, Beyond Now, and following this, with an expanding fanbase, his new release Blow is almost entirely vocal-led, diving headfirst into the world of US indie art-rock. Selwyn Harris caught up with McCaslin on a rare sabbatical to talk about his current shuffle playlist, the new album's politically-charged lyrics and how Bowie taught him to reach the unreachable
