Hugely acclaimed for her recent Grammy winning Chamber Music Society and Radio Music Society albums, prodigiously gifted bassist and singer Esperanza Spalding has positively leapt off the beaten track for her latest project, Emily’s D+Evolution.
Taking on the highly theatrical persona of ‘Emily’ (her middle name), she’s embraced rock-edged funk and performance poetry to embark on a psychedelic-hued voyage of self and artistic discovery. Peter Quinn spoke to the singer-songwriter about how the influences of jazz-rock giants Cream, the genius of Joni Mitchell and the liberating spirit of Wayne Shorter all contributed to Emily’s evolution
