Gerry Mulligan, one of the giants of jazz's first century, would have been 90 this year.
He left behind a legacy of epoch-defining recordings, notably The Birth of the Cool with Miles Davis, as well as a lifetime of pivotal encounters with luminaries such as Duke Ellington, Stan Getz and, most fruitfully, Chet Baker. Here in a series of revealing encounters with Roy Carr, the American composer, baritone saxophonist and arranger recalls key moments from his life as the pair crossed paths from 1957 right up to his final appearance at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1988
