Get The Blessing - Dancing In Your Head

Thursday, March 22, 2012

With the great Robert Wyatt singing backing vocals on their new album and a storming opening bass riff enough to blast the band and anyone in their wake into the earthquake danger zone, Andy Robson welcomes the return of the acronym-loving alphabetically disordered Get The Blessing, who have taken the Brit-Jazz scene by the scruff of the neck and lived to tell the tale t’s been a long time coming – almost three years – but Get The Blessing’s new release, OC DC is finally out there for world delectation.

Few bands make such an immediate impact as the blessed ones did with their debut, All Is Yes. In 2008, to the peeved astonishment of the jazz establishment, the band did a smash and grab on the BBC’s jazz album of the year award, running away with it like a child clutching a goodie bag after a party, hoping nobody had given them it by mistake.

But winning that gong so soon was something of a mixed, dare we say, blessing. As bass man Jim Barr remembers: “There was a time when we’d turn up at jazz festivals a bit scared. We’d ask ourselves ‘Are we a ‘proper’ jazz band?’ But we don’t care about that now.”
