Ginger Baker is quite simply one of the most influential drummers of all time – from his days with the Graham Bond Organisation and as a founding member of blues-rock improv giants Cream, to his subsequent high-level jazz-influenced collaborations and groups – as well as his 18 solo albums and work with Afro-beat king, Fela Kuti.

With his current Jazz Confusion group newly signed to hip US label Motéma, the band’s debut album Why? features Baker’s raw mix of heavy African rhythms and funky jazz and swing. Daniel Spicer braves the deadpan brickbats from this most tetchy of interviewees to discover that Baker’s love of music is as hard and heartfelt as ever
