A pivotal pianist with acclaimed groups Phronesis and Kairos 4tet, and keyboardist with Norwegian sax star Marius Neset, Ivo Neame is increasingly stepping out as a solo artist.
Back with his fourth and strongest album as a leader, Strata (Whirlwind Recordings) – with shining contributions from saxophonist Tori Freestone and vibist Jim Hart – its sharply written originals match contemporaneous jazz, lyrical folk and electronics with lucid vitality, and mark him as one whose time has come. He spoke to Stuart Nicholson about how his music has developed in spite of the increasingly tough conditions and lack of opportunities to play jazz in Britain today
