A journey man giant of jazz, Joe Lovano’s prolific career since the 1970s has been propelled by his passion for absorbing and assimilating a vast array of influences.

And while he’s worked with Lonnie Smith, Jack McDuff, Woody Herman, Elvin Jones, Carla Bley, Lee Konitz, Charlie Haden, John Scofield and countless others, he’s always sounded like himself. Set to headline at Cheltenham Jazz Festival and Ronnie Scott’s this month with his new Village Rhythms Band, Stuart Nicholson spoke to the sax great about his Wayne Shorter-inspired Sound Prints band and new album, and how learning the language of jazz is best done by living the music on and off the bandstand
