Julian Argüelles – Township Jive

Saxophonist Julian Argüelles is chief among the founding members of resurgent Brit-jazz big band Loose Tubes who are hitting top form today.

His newly released Basho Records album Let It Be Told pays fulsome tribute to exiled 1960s South African jazz pioneers The Blue Notes, while his second release this year, Tetra (on Whirlwind Recordings in October), sees him lead a quartet of young UK jazz stars as mentor and elder jazz statesman himself. Selwyn Harris spoke to Argüelles about these two releases and how he’s helped a golden thread of South African jazz to spread out across the world
