Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden - Seen and Heard

Pianist Keith Jarrett and bassist Charlie Haden initially played together in the pianist’s first trio in 1966 and subsequently in his ‘American Quartet’, alongside drummer Paul Motian and saxophonist Dewey Redman, and while their work together since has been intermittent they’ve retained the strongest of musical bonds.

Now, with the release of Last Dance, a second instalment of music from the sessions that produced their critically acclaimed 2010 duo album Jasmine, Stuart Nicholson talks to Jarrett about why knowing the meaning of a song’s lyrical sentiment and listening intensely while playing music are at the heart of his and Haden’s effortless musical empathy
