Loose Tubes – Anarchy In The UK

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

Disbanding 24 years ago, Loose Tubes became the stuff of Brit-jazz legend – bowing out with a bang at Ronnie Scott’s in 1990 and leaving an indelible impression as vivid and chaotic as the carnival-like atmosphere that surrounded everything they did.

Exerting a powerful influence on subsequent generations of jazz musicians, the band are set to reform for the first time since they first came together 30 years ago, premiering new material for their headline spot at Cheltenham Jazz Festival, along with a six-night residency at Ronnie’s and an appearance at Brecon Jazz Festival in August. Selwyn Harris spoke to four of the anarchic group’s original members – flautist Eddie Parker, bassist and educator Steve Berry, trumpeter Chris Batchelor and composer/keyboardist Django Bates – to discuss why the band has always been uneasy about conforming to any one else’s rules but their own.
