Since the 1980s pianist and composer Marc Cary has vitally linked hard bop icons, neo-funk pioneers and New York’s cutting edge music scene.

Yet increasingly it’s his own fiercely intelligent, passionately delivered solo works that feature a raw blues base with quicksilver pan-global rhythms, as on his electrifying new album, Four Directions, with his Focus Trio. Kevin Le Gendre spoke to Cary about the blues roots of his shimmering style of Indo-American jazz
