Nat Birchall – Spirits Up Above

The Manchester jazz scene has always offered its own distinct flavours, fostering a group of musicians searching for alternative means of expressing some very personal visions of where jazz can reside.

Alongside the likes of Jon Thorne, Stuart McCallum, Mike Walker, Matthew Halsall and more recently GoGo Penguin, tenor and soprano saxophonist Nat Birchall has emerged as a gentle giant of the scene. Daniel Spicer spoke to him about his penchant for channelling the great spiritual jazz legacy of John and Alice Coltrane into some of the most refreshingly direct and uplifting jazz being played today
