Having stamped their authority on the 2012 Mercury Music Prize shortlist, not least with a blistering performance at the awards ceremony that left the mainly rock and pop audience in slack-jawed awe, Roller Trio arrived like a bolt from the blue.
With their caustic-yet-catchy style meshing jerky funk, improv and giant melodies they’d brought Leeds’ avant jazz sounds to a mainstream audience. Now set to release their eagerly awaited follow up, Fracture, Selwyn Harris spoke to the band’s saxophonist James Mainwaring about how being thrust into the limelight was both intimidating and inspiring
