Rudresh Mahanthappa – Southern Flight

Rudresh Mahanthappa has, since his 1994 debut album Yatra, made deep in-roads into fusing his Indian heritage with an attacking, sharp-edged alto sax style.

While this has seen him merge the slurred, microtonal language of southern Indian Carnatic music with rhythmically advanced M-Base style jazz, his latest album Bird Calls finds him returning to one of his primary sources of inspiration: Charlie Parker. Stuart Nicholson spoke to the saxophonist about how he’s turned Parker’s music inside out and discovered new ways to unite his Indo-American culture
