Remarkably 2013 marks Stan Tracey’s 70th year as a professional musician; seven decades across which he forged the foundations of modern Brit Jazz – and performed with many US jazz giants at Ronnie Scott’s club between 1960-67 where he was the house pianist – while his definitive 1965 album, Under Milk Wood remains a pinnacle of British jazz.

Yet as Alyn Shipton discovers, it’s his beginnings as a military musician that link his latest work, The Flying Pig, and his refusal to rest on his creative laurels
