Power trio The Bad Plus are still going strong after almost two decades, no mean feat for a contemporary jazz instrumental ensemble.
Besides their genre-busting, collectivist approach to piano, bass and drums, they’ve also built up a huge fanbase with their incendiary live shows and unique cover versions. At the end of 2017 the widely admired post-bopper, Philly-born Orrin Evans, replaced original pianist Ethan Iverson, with the new line-up immediately releasing Never Stop II. Selwyn Harris grills the group on the eve of their debut performance at Cheltenham Jazz Festival, about the band’s initial rebel status, how the newcomer is settling in and what it’s like road-testing the new line-up
