Jazz At Lincoln Center – the New York-based performing arts complex that’s also a powerhouse of music education and live performances – has been celebrating its 25th birthday during 2013.
Yet its longstanding artistic director and trumpeter extraordinaire, Wynton Marsalis, remains a controversial figure in spite of his huge strides in spreading the word on jazz into the mainstream like few others have today. Speaking to Alyn Shipton about this landmark anniversary, Marsalis talks about the beginnings of J@LC, its current inclusiveness and valuing the past no matter the risks today
