The Musicians’ Company announces double bassist Fergus Quill as the winner of the Tina May young jazz musician award, 2022

The Musicians’ Company announced the winner of the Musicians’ Company Young Jazz Musician Award, 2022 as Fergus Quill (double bass).

Nominations for the final were made by many of the UK’s leading jazz musicians, music conservatoires and universities and the Company’s Jazz Committee selected six of the most outstanding young artists to perform during Sunday’s final in the Pizza Express Soho Jazz Club.

The six finalists presented an outstanding evening of music-making with a band consisting of Emma Rawicz (saxophone), Alexander Ridout (trumpet), Sam Norris (saxophone), Matyas Gayer (piano), Jas Kayser (drums) and Fergus Quill (double bass).

With the help of the audience’s vote, the winner was selected for this prestigious award at the end of the evening and the Master of The Musicians Company Graeme Knowles CVO presented Fergus Quill with the magnificent bronze winner’s medal. The winner also receives £1,000 and a further £600 for the chance to perform with his band as part of the Company’s jazz programme during the coming year.

The award has been renamed in memory of the late Tina May, one of the UK’s most revered jazz vocalists, who passed away earlier in 2022 and was the first winner of the Young Jazz Musician in 1992.
