Ten musicians from across the south of England have been selected for the Jazz South Radar commissions scheme, which will see them create new 12-15 minute pieces of music for up to three performers, which will be filmed and broadcast online in late 2020. The composers feature many emerging and established musicians, including bassist Olie Brice, saxophonist Josephine Davies, pianist Alexander Hawkins, saxophonist Andrew Hayes, electronics/synth player Hannah Jacobs, saxophonist John Martin, vocalist Randolph Matthews, saxophonist John Miles, pianist Robert Mitchell and keyboardist Rebecca Nash.

With a wide range of pieces planned – which span such ideas as Brice’s suite for double bass, trumpet and sax (alongside Nick Malcolm and Jason Yarde), to Hayes, who will write new music inspired by Dartmoor’s rich history of folk legend; and Matthews, who will create a new piece telling untold stories of the lives of black sailors, charting a course in music through the sometimes troubled waters of Britain’s maritime past, the works reflect a diverse range of musical ideas and subject matter. Further details of these will be announced this month.
