There’s a bounty of new music scheduled for release from the ECM imprint from mid-summer through to late autumn
Leading the pack is Face à Face, the new album featuring improvising bassist Barre Phillips and the electronics-playing son of Hungary’s great contemporary composer György Kurtág, György Jr, on an intimate set (released 19 August), while critically lauded German pianist Julia Hülsmann (pictured) returns with her Quartet on The Next Door (26 August), which presents a varied programme of almost exclusively original music, composed by herself and her colleagues – tenor saxophonist Uli Kempendorff, Marc Muellbauer on double bass and drummer Heinrich Köbberling. The album ‘has deep respect for the jazz tradition, with the quartet’s own modern twist’.
This is followed by a trio of releases in September with trumpeter and pianist Enrico Rava and Fred Hersch lining up for The Song Is You (9 Sept); the classically trained Dutch pianist Wolfert Brederode joins forces with the Matangi String Quartet for Ruins And Remains (23 Sept); and there’s another gem from the archives of retired piano legend Keith Jarrett Bordeaux Concert – recorded live in concert on 6 July 2016 at the L’Auditorium de l’Opéra National de Bordeaux – which is released on 30 September.
Highlights among the later releases include Norwegian bass master Arild Andersen who returns with Quartet for Affirmation (28 Oct) and the intriguing pairing of guitarist Jakob Bro and saxophonist Joe Lovano for Once Around The Room – A Tribute to Paul Motian (4 Nov), while renowned film composer Evgueni Galperine’s Theory of Becoming (7 Oct) and German pianist Benjamin Lackner’s Last Decade (14 Oct) complete the label’s busy release schedule.
