The jazz drummer’s debut solo album gets the nod for the prestigious music prize’s coveted list of 12 Albums Of The Year

The shortlist for this year’s Hyundai Mercury Prize ‘Albums Of The Year’ has been announced – with the prodigiously talented drummer, producer and BBC Radio 1Xtra presenter Moses Boyd receiving a nomination for his latest album Dark Matter. Boyd joins the other 11 shortlisted artists and their albums which include Anna Meredith (FIBS), Charli XCX (how i’m feeling now), Dua Lipa (Future Nostalgia), Georgia (Seeking Thrills), Kano (Hoodies All Summer), Lanterns on the Lake (Spook the Herd), Laura Marling (Song for Our Daughter), Michael Kiwanuka (KIWANUKA), Porridge Radio (Every Bad), Sports Team (Deep Down Happy) and Stormzy (Heavy is the Head).
Drummer Boyd made a sizeable impression with his duo with Binker Golding, but with that project on hiatus he’s been increasingly exploring his more electronica-fuelled solo forays, which saw him play his biggest solo gig to date on the eve of lockdown in March, when he headlined a sold-out Electric, Brixton. Dark Matter matches deep synth bass and soulful songs with the sound of London’s burgeoning new jazz scene with many of key its players guesting on the album with contributions from Joe Armon-Jones, Nathaniel Cross, Michael Underwood, Theon Cross, Nubya Garcia, Ife Ogunjobi, Chelsea Carmichael and bandmate Binker Golding among others. The winner of the Mercury Prize will be announced on 24 September 2020. The Prize’s broadcast partner, BBC Music, will be providing extensive television and radio coverage of the Prize and more details will be announced shortly.
