Joe Sanders, the US bassist, multi-instrumentalist and composer, releases his new album, Parallels, on Whirlwind Recordings on 11 October.
His third album as leader, it features a set of 10 tracks, six recorded in the studio by Sanders, and four taken from a French concert in October 2021. Backing him is a 'dream team' line-up that matches Sanders' full-bodied acoustic and electric bass presence with Seamus Blake (tenor saxophone), Logan Richardson (alto sax) and Gregory Hutchinson (drums) alongside guests Jure Pukl and Taylor Eigisti on tenor sax and keyboards respectively. Joe’s young son also features on melodica on ‘la vie sur la terre’.
“I believe that records are a way to show where you are and show where you’re going," comments the bassist. "All of this is a challenge for me to express the capability of something I’ve been learning, because that’s what growth is all about. I feel really confident with this one because it’s all of my music here: not just jazz, not just inside, not just outside - putting all the sides together in parallel.”
Sanders adds that 'Parallels' emerged as a spontaneous bass solo during a concert encore, "weaving melodies and harmonies that mirrored the energy of the crowd".
