The iconic jazz-singer-poet’s much-bootlegged 1980s show finally gets a proper release via the German label MiG
German label MiG is to release a famous concert recording by Gil Scott-Heron and his Amnesia Express band on 28 July. Available as a double vinyl or 2-CD package, the Legend In His Own Mind album was, according to the release notes, recorded at the Schauburg Kulturzentrum in Bremen (in what was then West Germany) on 18 April, 1983 (although other sources claim it is from 1981, which seems unlikely, as Gil was not recorded as being in West Germany at the time).
The technicians of Radio Bremen were onsite and recorded this show, which has been previously released in bootleg/grey market form, but never officially or in this sound quality.
Tracklist includes: ‘Johannesburg’, ‘Better Days Ahead’, ‘The Bottle’, ‘Washington DC’, ‘Shut 'Em Down’, ‘Winter In America’, ‘A Legend In His Own Mind’, ‘B-Movie’ ‘Three Miles Down’ and ‘Angola, Louisiana’.
Accompanying Gil (vocals, keyboards) are: Vernon James (alto and soprano saxes, flute), Ron Holloway (tenor sax), Glen ‘Astro’ Turner (keyboards, harmonica), Alonzo Bailey (trumpet, flugelhorn), Ed Brady (bass), Kenny Powell (drums) and Larry McDonald (percussion).
