Roll up to the Write Stuff
Friday, July 25, 2008
The London Jazz Festival in association with BBC Radio 3 is once again working in partnership with Jazzwise magazine to build on the huge success of The Write Stuff initiative. This scheme aims to give aspiring music writers the opportunity to work with professional journalists to improve their writing skills, receive insights into career paths and develop an understanding of jazz criticism – as well as getting to go to lots of concerts! The initiative will include sessions on feature writing, reviewing and editing, and will be led by writer and broadcaster Kevin Le Gendre, with additional input from Jon Newey, editor and publisher of Jazzwise, and a range of other leading industry figures and writers.
Previous participants have gone on to receive commissions and Chris Ackerley, one of last year’s participants has commented: “The practical skills that I gained whilst on the scheme, and the contacts that have come as a result of it, have been invaluable to the advancement of my career in journalism.” Previous participants have been of all ages and have come to the Write Stuff with a wide variety of different experiences.
Several previous participants have continued to have work published in Jazzwise and this year’s participants will have their work posted on both the Jazzwise and festival’s websites. One review will also be featured in Jazzwise magazine itself. If you are interested in participating in The Write Stuff please submit a 300-word review of a gig that you have seen recently, a paragraph explaining what you hope to gain from taking part and your CV by Monday 15 September 2008. The address to send it to is: The Write Stuff, Serious, 51 Kingsway Place, Sans Walk, London, EC1R 0LU or education@serious.org.uk with “The Write Stuff application” in the subject line. (Applicants must be 18 years old or over.).
