South African Singer Joins Derek Trucks Band For Islington Gig
Saturday, October 13, 2007
A very rammed, very sticky Carling Academy in Islington last night gave the Derek Trucks Band quite a reception as the American band took to the London stage for just the second time. The band also welcomed surprise guest South African Vusi Mahlasela to the stage for a standout routine with singer Mike Mattison and an impromptu dance routine with percussionist Count M'Butu

Other highlights of the gig were the band's version of Roland Kirk's 'Volunteered Slavery', Trucks' take on 'My Favourite Things' and the joyous 'Sailing Home'. The setlist was very similar to the band's last appearance in London in May 2006. A pity really but a small price to pay for the privilege of hearing such a musical band, easily one of the finest live bands on the touring circuit. Report: Stephen Graham
