The guitarist and bandleader returns with a new multi-faceted EP with the sextet incarnation of his Grande Família band
Following up his critically acclaimed debut album, Penelope, award-winning guitarist Billy Marrows is set to release his Mount Tibidabo EP on 29 November 2024.
The EP features the Grande Família Sextet, a smaller incarnation of his 12-piece ensemble, including Mike Soper (trumpet), Tom Ridout (saxes - BBC Young Jazz Musician Finalist 2016), Olli Martin (tenor/bass trombones), Flo Moore (bassist for Jordan Rakei), Tom Potter (drummer for Rosie Frater-Taylor) and Billy on guitar. Together, they deliver a tight yet creative sound with characterful melodic themes and solos.
Two new compositions feature alongside fresh versions of pieces from the Penelope album. The title track is a musical representation of Billy’s trek to the summit of Mount Tibidabo, paired with a music video (see below). Next is a joyful trio version of the band's signature tune ‘A Grande Família’, followed by a yearning waltz ‘The Heron’, inspired by a card received from America. The EP closes with a sextet arrangement of the traditional sea shanty ‘Shenandoah’.
For inspiration during the recording, the band was surrounded by paintings by Billy's mother Penny, which will feature as cover artwork for the singles. 25% of the proceeds go to World Child Cancer, continuing the legacy of Billy’s debut album which raised £5,300 in Penny's memory. The EP launch party is downstairs at the Vortex as part of the new Vortex Lates series on 7 Dec 2024. The Mount Tibidabo EP is out on 29 November, with the first single on 4 October.
