The alto saxophonist shares a track from his new album That's Him: The Music of Kurt Weill with acclaimed singer Sara Dowling on vocals
London-based alto saxophonist Sam Braysher’s new record takes a closer look at the fascinating music of Kurt Weill. The German-American composer traversed the worlds of jazz, European classical music, musical theatre and opera, and is best known for songs like ‘Mack the Knife’ and ‘September Song’, but Braysher showcases fresh, swinging arrangements of some lesser-known Weill pieces (and one characterful original composition). He is joined by an all-star rhythm section and special guest Sara Dowling, who was named 'Best Vocalist' at the 2019 British Jazz Awards.
‘The Right Guy For Me’, the album's first single, showcases Dowling's powerful vocals over an arrangement by Braysher, followed by solos from the saxophonist and Hungarian pianist Matyas Gayer. Originally written for a 1938 Fritz Lang film, this obscure Weill composition has not been interpreted as a jazz number until now.
Commenting on the music Braysher said: "I stumbled across this tune in an old book of Kurt Weill sheet music. I could immediately imagine Sara swinging it, and of course she does to brilliant effect. I took the harmony from the written 'verse' to create the instrumental introduction which is heard at the beginning of the arrangement.”
That's Him: The Music of Kurt Weill is released on all platforms on Friday 28 June.
