The London-based low-ender returns with a new Indo-jazz inspired album

Dynamic bass guitarist Shez Raja – who’s known for his high-energy live shows and collaborations with the likes of Trilok Gutu and Mike Stern – returns with the release of his new album, Tales From The Punjab, his debut for Ubuntu Music, which is released on Friday 19 March 2021.

The album is the result of Raja’s visit in early 2020 to the Punjab, where he set out “to explore his identity and immerse himself in the musical culture of his roots”. Recording the music in the vibrant city of Lahore, he collaborated with some of the subcontinent’s most accomplished musicians, including Ahsan Papu (bansuri flute player for legendary singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan), Zohaib Hassan (seventh-generation sarangi player of the Amritsar Gharana), Kashif Ali Dani (tabla maestro of the Punjab Gharana which includes Zakir Hussain), singer Fiza Haider and cajon guru Qamar Abbas.

Speaking about the album raja said: “For several days we shared a musical and spiritual journey together through ancient ragas, traditional melodies and free improvisations, creating a bridge between cultures with beautiful, exotic and timeless sounds. We cannot wait to share this recording with the world!”
