Over the past year or so, London-based ‘electric soul’ collective Ese & The Vooduu People – led by singer-songwriter-guitarist Ese Okorodudu and known for their improv-heavy, often incendiary live performances – have been experimenting with adding jazz flavours to their already eclectic musical stew. The first fruits of this have just been released on a new mini-album, Tainted Love. This will be followed by a more ‘overtly jazzy’ EP in the summer.

For the music to her latest video, Ese is joined by UK jazz flute master Gareth Lockrane and Jackson Baird on Fender Rhodes for a haunting, spare and soulful cover of the Gil Scott-Heron classic “Home Is Where The Hatred Is” (from the landmark 1971 album Pieces of a Man and later covered by Esther Phillips and also featured on Tainted Love).

Says Ese: "Jazz appeals to me not just because of its spiritual nature, expressiveness and improvisational spontaneity – it's also a very broad church with hundreds of denominations within it. Sun Ra is supposed to have once said ‘Jazz is what I say it is’ – I like that attitude. I like Gil too: his wonderful, world-weary voice and his brilliance as a writer and social critic, and also because he broke down boundaries and had a huge influence on every genre of black music. As a musician, I'm sometimes pigeonholed as a rocker or a soul singer but really I'm interested in crossing borders and mixing genres, and Gil is a huge inspiration for me in that respect."
