The iconic pianist whips up a fist-bumping storm at the renowned festival in a rare piece of archival footage
The Montreux Years live album series continues with the release, on 23 June, of an explosive double LP set of performances from iconic pianist McCoy Tyner, with nine tracks spanning his festival appearances between 1986 and 2009. The release comes as the festival hosts its 57th edition this year with a typically varied line up including the likes of Bob Dylan, Yussef Dayes, Nile Rodgers and more.
Ahead of the album’s release comes a rare piece of footage of the legendary pianist in full flight on his piece ‘Latino Suite’ (1986), which you can watch below, with this track included on the forthcoming live album. The LP set – which is also released on CD, download and streaming platforms via BMG/Montreux Jazz Festival – delves into McCoy’s repertoire with live versions of 1981’s ‘Eternally Yours’ and ‘Walk Spirit, Talk Spirit’ from his1973 live album Enlightenment. Taken from McCoy’s ninth album and his third release on the Blue Note label, there’s also a powerhouse performance of ‘African Village’ and ‘Fly with the Wind’ from the 1976 album of the same name.

McCoy Tyner: The Montreux Years is the latest instalment of The Montreux Years series, that now includes releases featuring Nina Simone, Etta James, Marianne Faithfull, Muddy Waters, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Monty Alexander, Paco De Lucía, Michel Petrucciani, and most recently Dr. John. All releases in the series have been mastered by Tony Cousins at London’s renowned Metropolis Studios.
