Friday, September 2, 2005

The Cork Jazz Festival, one of the most important events on Ireland's arts and cultural calendar, opens its doors at the end of October (28-31 Oct) for the twenty ninth time.

Forty thousand music fans are expected in Cork for a long weekend diet of jazz and Guinness to see nearly 1,000 musicians from 25 countries performing in over 75 venues throughout the City. The main concert venues are the Everyman Palace theatre, Cork Opera House and the Triskel Arts Centre plus the famous Guinness Festival club at the Gresham Metropole hotel. The Guinness Jazz Trail also offers entertainment in over 40 pubs and clubs (most of which is free). The festival has long been presenting the best in truly international acts and this year is no

exception. This year's highlights include a double bill with McCoy Tyner's trio and the Al Foster Quartet; Chick Corea;

Joshua Redman's Elastic band (with support from the UK's Acoustic Ladyland) and Dave Holland's Quintet return to Cork for a double bill with Roy Haynes' Quartet. This year's artist in residence (following on from Bobby Watson last year) will be the world-renowned trumpet star and jazz educator Jon Faddis, who will be giving a series of workshops and concerts throughout the festival.
