Derby jazz aces head home

Friday, March 4, 2005

Next month's Derby Jazz Week on 13-17 April has a strong local flavour to its programme.

Pianist Tom Cawley, who was born in the east midlands city, plays three times during the event with a solo set, as a member of Acoustic Ladyland and in singer Gwyneth Herbert's band. Another jazz musician with local connections, guitarist Phil Robson, returns to his former stomping ground to appear as a soloist with the BBC Big Band for a gig at the Derby Assembly Rooms. Pianist Alex Wilson, who grew up in the city, is also on the bill with his R&B Latino project at the Darwin Suite. The East Midlands Youth Jazz Orchestra, fresh from this year's International Association of Jazz Educators conference in California, is also to appear, along with guest saxophonist Alan Barnes who worked on a festival commission for the event which the orchestra will play.
