Jazz breaking news: Alex Wilson, Hugh Masekela, And Soweto Kinch Breeze In For South Coast Gigs
Wednesday, October 20, 2010
Located on the fringes of the labyrinth of High Fidelity-style record shops, cult boutiques and vegan-friendly juice bars that embody Brighton’s trendy Lanes district, the Brighton Dome’s programme for the coming month includes a generous selection of jazz gigs.
On the back of his guest spot with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra during their summer residency, pianist and composer Alex Wilson brings his Mali Latino project, a remarkable meeting of musical cultures discussed in detail in the October issue of Jazzwise, to the Dome on 2 November. Wilson, along with collaborators kora virtuoso Madou Sidiki and balafon player Ahmed Fofana, heads a nine-piece band for this performance – part of the Mali Latino launch tour following the release of the record earlier this month.
Any ghost of a vuvuzela still lingering on from the World Cup should be firmly blown away by South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela and his band in concert on 16 November alongside vocalists Hilda Tloubatla, Nobesuthu Mbadu and Mildred Mangxola who make up the all-female mbaqanga group The Mahotella Queens. Masekela, who is interviewed in the current edition of Jazzwise, also brings this line-up to the London Jazz Festival on 12 November.
With his blend of jazz, hip hop, spoken word and gospel, Soweto Kinch, whose latest album The New Emancipation was released to acclaim in September, plays material from the new record at the Pavilion Theatre on 25 November following on from his London Jazz Festival appearance.
As part of their final tour, Acoustic Ladyland visit the Dome on 29 November. The jazz-punk noiseniks – comprising sax player Pete Wareham, guitarist Chris Sharkey, drummer Seb Rochford and bassist Ruth Goller – are currently in flux as they are shortly to disband. So expect loads of experimentation with new material as well as reworked gems from their back catalogue and a fond farewell from the much loved band.
