Friday, August 30, 2013

Clarinetist and bandleader Arun Ghosh (pictured) ignites his potent Indo-jazz sound with a new album, A South Asian Suite, released on 30 September with UK tour dates to follow.

The album, released on the Camoci label, is his third studio recording and is an ambitious six movement suite which, according to Ghosh, “is inspired by the folk music, landscape and people of the Subcontinent, as seen from the view point of a British-Asian from a north of England town.”

The music was initially commissioned by Manchester Mela and the recording features Zoe Rahman on piano as well as many of the musicians who play in Ghosh’s regular band, including saxophonists Idris Rahman and Chris Williams, bassist Liran Donin, drummer Pat Illingworth and tabla player Nilesh Gulhane. The album is launched at Pizza Express Jazz Club, Soho on 29 September followed by dates at: The Core, Corby (4 Oct); Band On The Wall, Manchester (8 Oct); The Barrell House, Totnes (17 Oct); Lighthouse, Poole (18 Oct); Seven Arts, Leeds (25 Oct); Jazz Re:freshed, Ladbroke Grove, London (31 Oct); The Sage, Gateshead (1 Nov); New Art Exchange, Nottingham (2 Nov); The Albany, southeast London (24 Nov); and Westminster Theatre, Keele (2 Dec).
