Jazz breaking news: Banda big bands and Balkan brass for Talos Festival 2013

From 5 September for 10 days the town of Ruvo in the Puglia region in Italy’s south is filled with the sounds of banda, or brass band – the mother of all big bands! In Italy, banda describes a wind ensemble or orchestra – a quite different type of big band – typically featuring 50 to 60 musicians with an arsenal that usually includes four to six tubas, five or more French horns, a swarm of trumpets, trombones and clarinets, plus bassoons, oboes and flutes – all the important reed and brass instruments.
