Jazz breaking news: Branford and SNJO dive in to Wayne’s world

Friday, September 6, 2013

Revered saxophonist Branford Marsalis is set to star as guest soloist with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO) for a series of three dates at the end of September that celebrate the music of Wayne Shorter.

The concerts follow his quartet’s latest release, Four MFs Playin’ Tunes, and a highly praised performance at Love Supreme Jazz Festival in Sussex this July. Directing the SNJO performances is Tommy Smith, a fellow saxophonist, who, beyond leading the SNJO, also leads his own groups.

Smith has built-up SNJO’s increasingly international reputation, and during the last few years the orchestra have welcomed other internationally renowned guests such as John Scofield and Arild Anderson. This time the US saxophonist and Scottish orchestra are getting together to play the music of Wayne Shorter, in performances that are set to include works such as ‘Footprints’, ‘Virgo’ and ‘Speak no Evil’. The series of three concerts begins at Concert Hall, Perth on 27 September, followed by: Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Glasgow (28 Sept) and Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh (29 Sept).
