Jazz breaking news: Buck, Bevan, Bourne And Barre Go Out On The Road
Wednesday, October 6, 2010
Necks drummer and percussionist Tony Buck is on the road again in November with the up-for-it free blowing saxophone player Tony Bevan, the raw unbridled talent of pianist Matthew Bourne, and rare sightings by the bassist Barre Phillips, remembered for his unaccompanied solo bass records and The Trio.
Buck and Bevan toured last autumn together with cutting edge US guitarist Joe Morris just ahead of The Necks album release Silverwater. Beefheart-influenced saxophonist Bevan who is best known for his work with free jazz drummer Sunny Murray has built up a loyal following for his specially put together groups and projects. On his Foghorn Records imprint his extensive discography has been added to recently with the album A Big Hand featuring the highly rated bassist Dominic Lash.
Matthew Bourne was in action recently at the Brit Jazz fest back in the summer at Ronnie Scott’s with Pete Wareham, and next month he also appears at the LJF with vocalist Seaming To with whom he collaborated last year on the Songs From A Lost Piano tour.
Barre Phillips and Matthew Bourne have a simpàtico relationship and Phillips who is known for his unaccompanied bass breakthroughs in 1968 followed up with cult success in The Trio with John Surman and Stu Martin in the 70s, during the early days of ECM. A decade later his wonderful album Aquarian Rain in 1991, is also among some of the selected highlights of his career to date.
