Covering big names such as John Scofield, Dave Holland and Carla Bley, a strong programme of new cutting-edge UK jazz, a free jazz series curated by Comedian Stewart Lee, a Norwegian jazz series and high profile jazz crossover names like Jamie Cullum and new additions, Curtis Stigers and Buddy Greco are all part of the mix this year.
The festival, which runs from 28 April until 3 May and is held in association with BBC Radio 2 and sponsored by Jazzwise, has just announced Barclays Bank as a title sponsor and for the first time will feature a new outdoor festival area, Jazz on the Square, that includes a 600-seater arena, the Budvar free stage, food and drink stalls and a jazz market. In addition there’s a series of group workshops presented by Yamaha for entry level players as well as the finals of the Yamaha Jazz Experience competition; a Budvar Brewed Jazz competition to find the best up and coming jazz band in the country; a Jazz It Up showcase of school jazz bands and a fringe festival, details of which will be announced in the next issue.
